Non-USC Zoom participants
Can non-USC people or people with a free Zoom account join my USC Zoom meeting?
Yes! When they try to join your meeting, they will appear in the Waiting Room under Manage Participants. Click on Admit next to their name.
The meeting will still retain all the features of your USC Zoom pro account (up to 24 hours and 300 participants) even if you have participants who have Zoom basic free accounts.
Are there restrictions on non-USC people or people with a free Zoom account, and USC Zoom meetings?
You cannot set non-USC people as an Alternative host when you are scheduling a new meeting. But once the Zoom meeting is in session, you can assign any participant, including non-USC people, Co-host privileges.
Additionally, any non-USC people cannot directly join your USC Zoom meeting but are sent to a waiting room to await admittance. This is a locked setting implemented by ITS on March 25, 2020 to discourage Zoombombing. For reference, please see ITS's message to faculty regarding Zoom security changes.
Configuring Zoom settings
We recommend configuring your Zoom settings online at https://usc.zoom.us/profile/setting rather than on the Zoom app, which doesn't show the comprehensive list of settings.
Why does Zoom keep sending me annoying emails reminding me that my meetings have begun?
By default, Zoom sends you an email when attendees join your meeting before you do. To turn this off:
- Go to https://usc.zoom.us/profile/setting.
- Scroll down to the section titled Email Notification.
- Turn off the notification for When attendees join meeting before host by clicking on the blue toggle button.
Additional troubleshooting
Why can't I use Zoom from my remote desktop?
If you join a Zoom meeting while using remote desktop, Zoom will try to turn on your work computer’s camera (displaying your empty office seat). Make sure that you are back on your personal computer's desktop before trying to join a Zoom meeting. Or, if you need remote desktop to stay active, join the Zoom meeting using the Zoom app on your phone.
