Overview
USC offers 1Password Password Manager to USC faculty, staff, and affiliates (iVIPs) to help with creating, remembering, and storing work-related login credentials.
Once you receive and set up a 1Password business account through USC, you'll have the option to redeem a family account, which can be used by up to four additional family members for non-USC login credentials.
What is a password manager?
A password manager helps you manage logins across multiple accounts and devices. It can:
- Generate strong, unique passwords for your separate login accounts
- Securely store those passwords and automatically input them into login forms to save you time
These features help protect you from security risks associated with using the same password for multiple accounts or writing down your passwords in a non-secure location.
Requesting an account
You can request your USC 1Password account through DTS:
Setting up your account
When you set up your 1Password account, you must download 1Password and then sign in on the 1Password app. If you only sign into 1Password through your browser, you can get locked out if your browser cache is cleared or if you are using a private/incognito window.
Activating your USC 1Password Business Account
Once your request is processed, you will receive an invitation email. Make sure to click the Join now link in the email within 5 days. For detailed steps, refer to the ITS guide. Do not use a private or incognito browser window to perform these steps:
Once you've signed in, you must download and sign into the 1Password app on at least one device. To prevent accidentally getting locked out of your account, we recommend signing into the 1Password app on multiple devices, such as a computer and a phone.
You can optionally add the 1Password browser extension.
Redeeming a 1Password Family Account
To store personal (non-USC) login credentials, you can redeem a free family account. This account can be used by up to four additional family members.
- Go to https://uscit.1password.com/profile. Click Redeem Now (next to "Claim your free family account").
- Click Create a new family account.
- Fill out your name and personal (non-USC) email address, and click Create Account.
- Check your non-USC email for the verification code. Input it onto the 1Password page and click Next.
- Follow the remaining steps to complete account setup.
- Make sure to download and sign into the 1Password app on at least one device, and preferably two.
Your USC 1Password business account and your personal family account are both tied to your USC affiliation: if you separate from USC, both 1Password accounts are disabled at the same time as your USC NetID.
Migrating data from LastPass to 1Password
If you previously had a LastPass personal account through USC, you can either:
- Delete your LastPass account and start fresh with 1Password, or
- Import your LastPass data into 1Password
Import your LastPass data into 1Password
- Follow the "Setting up your account" section above to redeem and set up your 1Password family account.
-
Download the 1Password app for Windows or Mac if you haven't already done so. Once you open the 1Password app, make sure you're signed into your family account. If the top item in the left menu is "USC," click it and select Our Family from the dropdown. If "Our Family" does not appear at all, select Manage Accounts… and add your family account to 1Password.
- Click Import passwords. Follow the prompts to enter your LastPass credentials and begin the import.

Account recovery
Being signed into the 1Password app on multiple devices is the best way to ensure that you can still access your account if you forget your login or get locked out of your account on a device or in your browser.
If your account is already locked and inaccessible, you can submit a ticket to ITS for assistance with the account recovery process.
