Overview
Sometimes, you have to perform an additional sign-in before you can print to a Dornsife network printer. How this looks:
-
Mac: The printer is listed and you can select it, but your file doesn't print. Instead, a Hold for Authentication message appears when you open the printer queue.
-
Windows PC: The printer is listed and you can select it, but your file doesn't print. Instead, a Sign in required message appears in PaperCut.
This guide provides a straightforward fix for this issue.

Why is this happening?
ITS requires you to update your USC NetID passphrase on an annual basis: this passphrase change causes PaperCut to also require you to sign in again.
In most cases, this only takes a minute or so to fix following our instructions below, but you can also contact DTS if this doesn't immediately fix the issue.
"Hold for Authentication" on a Mac
If your file didn't print and you're using a Mac, follow the steps below:
- Make sure you are connected to Ethernet or USC Secure Wireless. Sometimes, computers will default to USC Guest Wireless without your awareness.
- In the dock, click the Print Center icon.

- If "Hold for Authentication" appears under the file name, click the round refresh
icon.

- Type the following credentials:
- Name: Your USC NetID@dts.usc.edu (for example, ttrojan@dts.usc.edu)
- Password: Your USC NetID passphrase

- Select Remember this password and click OK.
If "Hold for authentication" persists
If the above steps are unsuccessful and you still see "Hold for Authentication" after multiple attempts, contact DTS at 213-740-2775 or ts@dornsife.usc.edu for troubleshooting help.
"Sign in required" on a Windows PC
If your file didn't print and you're using a Windows PC, follow the steps below:
- Make sure you are connected to Ethernet or USC Secure Wireless. Sometimes, computers will default to USC Guest Wireless without your awareness.
- In the system tray (lower right on the desktop), click the PaperCut
icon and select View my printers.

- Don't see this icon? Click the Expand
icon to see all icons.

- Locate the printer, and click Sign in to install.

- Type the following credentials, and click Sign in and install:
- Dornsife Account: Your USC NetID@dts.usc.edu (for example, ttrojan@dts.usc.edu)
- Password: Your USC NetID passphrase
If "Sign in required" persists
If the above steps are unsuccessful and you still see "Sign in required" after multiple attempts, contact DTS at 213-740-2775 or ts@dornsife.usc.edu for troubleshooting help.
