Overview
This guide explains how to access and use the Dornsife workspace in Slack. Any Dornsife faculty, staff, or student can request to join the Dornsife workspace.
Accessing Slack
You can sign into USC Slack on your computer or in the browser using your USC NetID and passphrase. For detailed instructions, refer to our guide:
The guide also explains how to customize your profile and settings, and provides links to Slack usage guides.
Accessing the Dornsife workspace
Step 1: Request access
There are two ways to join the Dornsife workspace:
- Option 1: Submit a request to join.
- Option 2: Have a current member invite you using your USC NetID@usc.edu email address (for example, you can be invited as ttrojan@usc.edu but not through an email alias such as tabitha.trojan@usc.edu or ttrojan@dornsife.usc.edu).
Once your request is approved, DTS will add you to the Dornsife workspace and you will receive an email from Slack with further instructions.
Step 2: Open the workspace in Slack
You may have access to multiple workspaces in USC Slack. Your current workspace name appears in the upper left:

To switch workspaces, click the current workspace name. Then, select University of Southern California, and select USC Dornsife College of Letters (uscdornsife.slack.com). This is the Dornsife workspace.

Using channels in the Dornsife workspace
View or join a channel
- Public channels: Any Dornsife workspace member can search for, view, and join public channels. Any channel member can add other Dornsife workspace members to the public channel.
- Private channels: Private channels are only visible to current channel members, and you can only join a private channel if a current member invites you. Even Dornsife workspace admins who were not invited cannot see these private channels.
Leave a channel
If a channel is no longer relevant to you, you can leave it at any time. If you leave a private channel, be aware that you will no longer be able to search for it and can only view it again if a current member invites you.
Create, edit, and manage a channel
- Public channels: Only the Dornsife workspace admins can create public channels. To request a new public channel, submit a New Public Channel request.
- Private channels: Any Dornsife workspace member can create a private channel.

The guide includes information about archiving channels, inviting guests to a channel, and multi-workspace channels.
