Overview
As a Dornsife faculty or staff member, or an authorized Dornsife graduate student, you can print to your department's wireless or network printers. In this guide we explain and link to four different printing methods you can use at USC Dornsife:
- (Recommended) Print directly from your computer
- Print using Web Print at https://dtsprint.dts.usc.edu
- Print using email (print-release printers only)
- Print using AirPrint (iOS devices only)
For assistance, you can submit a ticket to our Help Desk or start a chat with us (red droplet-shaped icon in the bottom right corner of this page).
Before you begin: Verifying network connection and printer access
Before trying to print, make sure that:
- The printer is on and isn't displaying an error message
- You have permission to print to the printer
- Your computer is connected to the Internet via either Ethernet or USC Secure Wireless (do not use USC Guest Wireless)
Requesting printer access
If you are new to USC Dornsife or have never printed to a Dornsife printer before, you may need to request a Dornsife Account first:
If you have a Dornsife Account but your department printers don't appear as options when you log into PaperCut Print, you may need to request department printer access:
Printing to a Dornsife network printer
There are multiple methods for printing to a Dornsife network printer. You can:
-
(Recommended) Print directly from your computer
- Instructions: Printing with PaperCut Print Deploy Client
- Ethernet or USC Secure Wireless required
- This method requires you to install the printer on your computer (one-time process taking less than five minutes)
- Once the printer has been added, you can open files and directly print from your computer anytime
-
Print using the Web Print website
- Instructions: Using Web Print
- Ethernet or USC Secure Wireless required
- This method uses the Web Print website to print and lets you skip installing the printer, which can be useful if, for example, you are using a library computer instead of your own computer
- However, documents you want to print must be in the form of files that can be uploaded
-
Print from email (print-release printers only)
- If you are using a print-release printer, you can email your files as attachments to printing@dornsife.usc.edu
- We recommend printing standard PDFs rather than Microsoft files or image files
- Once you receive the confirmation email (less than a minute), you can walk up to the print-release printer and release your print job
-
Print using AirPrint (iOS devices only)
Using a print-release network printer
Some Dornsife network printers are print-release printers. When you send a file to a print-release printer, the file does not automatically print. Instead, there is a two-step process to use the printer:
Step 1: Send the file to print
You can use any of the four above methods (print directly from your computer, print using the Web Print website, print from email, or print using airDrop) to send your file to the printer.
Step 2: Release the file on the printer itself
Now, you can walk up to the printer and use the printer panel to log in and "release" the file, which immediately starts printing:
- Tap your USCard on the card reader next to the printer.
- If this is your first time using a Dornsife print-release printer, the printer panel prompts you to enter your username and password. You only have to perform this action once, and in the future, can just tap your USCard.
- Username: Your USC NetID (For example, if your email address is ttrojan@usc.edu, your username is ttrojan)
- Password: Your USC NetID passphrase
- Tap the Print Release icon.
- Select your files and tap Print.
Using a local (non-network) printer
Most printers at Dornsife are network printers, meaning that they can be printed to wirelessly by anyone who has been granted access. If you cannot find a specific printer on the Dornsife network, it could be the case that the printer is set up as a local printer. A local printer:
- Is intended for use by one staff member
- Requires a wired connection, such as a USB cable, between the printer and your computer
Troubleshooting
If you're having trouble printing from your computer, we recommend using the Web Print website. Web Print lets you upload and print files to Dornsife network printers:
If you continue having trouble printing from your computer, let us know whether you can successfully print files using Web Print when you submit a ticket to DTS. This will help us troubleshoot whether the printing issue lies with your computer settings, your account, or with the printer itself.
If other staff members beside you also cannot print to a specific network printer, or the printer is displaying an error message even after you try restarting it, the issue is likely hardware-related: we recommend that you submit a ticket to DTS.
