Overview
You can print from your computer to your group/department's designated on-campus wireless printers—more commonly known as Dornsife network printers. In this guide we discuss four different methods you can use to print to a Dornsife network printer:
- Printing directly from your computer
- Printing from the Web Print website
- Printing from email (print-release only)
- Printing from an iPad/iPhone

Before you begin: verifying printer access and Internet connection
Before trying to print, make sure that:
- The printer is on and isn't displaying an error message
- You have permission to print to the printer
- Your computer is connected to the Internet via either Ethernet or USC Secure Wireless (do not use USC Guest Wireless)
Requesting printer access
If you have not been granted access to a particular network printer and you qualify for access (e.g. the printer belongs to your department), please submit the applicable form.

Printing to a Dornsife network printer
There are multiple methods for printing to a Dornsife network printer. All of these methods require an Internet connection via either Ethernet or USC Secure Wireless (USC Guest Wireless will not work for this). Click on a method below to view instructions:
Method 1: Print directly from your (Dornsife OR personal) computer
To print directly from your computer, you simply need to install the specific Dornsife network printer to your computer using our instructions:
Once the printer has been added, you can open any file(s) and directly print from your computer to the network printer.
Method 2: Print from the Web Print website
You can use the Web Print website to upload and send any file(s) to a network printer, without needing to add (install) the printer on your computer:
Method 3: Print from email (print-release only)
If you are using a print-release printer, you can directly email your file(s) as an attachment to:
You will receive an automatic reply confirming that your file has been received and is being processed. You can then walk up to a print-release printer and, using the printer's interface screen, release your file for print.
We recommend sending your files as standard PDFs if you use this method, rather than as Microsoft files or image files.
Method 4: Print from an iPad/iPhone
If you're not near a computer, you can use AirPlay on an iPad or iPhone to print to a network printer. Make sure that your iPad/iPhone is connected to the Internet using USC Secure Wireless (the network printers will not work on USC Guest Wireless).
Using a print-release network printer
Some Dornsife network printers are "print release" type printers. When you send a file to a print-release printer, the file does not automatically print. Instead, after sending the file, you walk up to the printer and use the printer's interface screen to log in and "release" the file for print.
Use any of the four methods above to send your file(s) to a print-release printer. Once you've sent your file, follow these steps:
If this is your first time using a Dornsife print-release printer
- Walk over to the printer.
- Tap your USCard (this is your physical USC ID card) on the card reader next to the printer.
- The screen prompts you to enter your username and password:
- Username: Your USC NetID (e.g. if your email address is ttrojan@usc.edu, your username is ttrojan)
- Password: Your USC NetID passphrase
- Once you have successfully logged in for the first time, you will be able to simply tap your USCard without having to input your username and password in the future.
- Tap the Print Release icon.
- Select/deselect the file(s) you want to print by tapping on the checkbox next to the file name.
- Tap Print.
If you have used a Dornsife print-release printer before
- Walk over to the printer.
- Tap your USCard (this is your physical USC ID card) on the card reader next to the printer.
- Tap the Print Release icon.
- Select/deselect the file(s) you want to print by tapping on the checkbox next to the file name.
- Tap Print.
Using a local (non-network) printer
Most printers at Dornsife are Dornsife network printers, meaning that they are intended for shared use. Anyone who has been granted access to a specific network printer can print to it wirelessly.
However, a few printers are local printers and are intended for one person to use only. These local printers do not appear on the Dornsife network. To print to a local printer, you must connect your computer to it via USB cable (rather than printing wirelessly).
Troubleshooting
If you're having trouble printing from your computer, we recommend using Web Print, which lets you print files to any network printer without needing to first add (install) the printer to your computer:
If other people besides you also cannot print to a specific network printer, or the printer is displaying an error message, and you've already tried turning the printer off and on again, please get in touch with us directly (the issue is likely hardware-related).
