If you already backed up your old computer's files to an external storage device using Time Machine, your device is formatted for macOS and is unreadable by Windows: you will not be able to transfer files using the external storage device.
If your old computer is still functional, follow our instructions for "Transferring files using OneDrive (recommended)" above.
If your old computer is no longer functional, but the external storage device is all you have
DTS can help you extract your files from the external storage device: to request assistance, submit a ticket to our Help Desk.
If you prefer to do this yourself, and you have access to another, functioning Mac—which we'll call the intermediary Mac—you can transfer the files from the external storage device to the intermediary Mac, upload them to OneDrive, and then download them to the new Windows computer.
- Connect the external storage device to the intermediary Mac. Do not follow Apple's prompts for using Time Machine or Migration Assistant software to transfer files. Instead, open Finder and manually navigate to Time Machine's most recent backup folder.
- Go to https://usc.edu/onedrive, and sign in using your USC NetID credentials.
- Upload the folders from Time Machine's most recent backup folder to your OneDrive account.
- On your new Windows computer, go to https://usc.edu/onedrive. Download the folders you just uploaded from the intermediary Mac.
Once you've completed this transfer, we strongly recommend setting up OneDrive to back up your new computer. Follow our guide, "Setting up OneDrive for computer backups."
