Overview
Before returning a loaner device borrowed through the Faculty and Staff Equipment Loaner program, make sure that you:
- Transfer any files/data you want to keep from the loaner into a USC-approved option such as cloud storage (our recommendation!), an external hard drive, or another USC computer
- (Mac laptops and iPads only) Log out of your iCloud/Apple ID
Below, we review the steps required for these actions, and include links for device purchasing for longer term use. We suggest performing these steps a day before you return the loaner device, to ensure enough time.
Why is it important to follow these steps?
Once you return a loaner, it will be wiped and reset. This means that any files or data you have stored on the loaner are permanently erased, and DTS cannot recover that information.
Preparing a loaner Windows laptop for return
Before you return a loaner, it's important to transfer files you want to keep from the loaner to a USC-approved option such as cloud storage (our recommendation), an external hard drive, or another USC computer. Once you return a loaner, it will be wiped and reset, making your files irrecoverable.
Transferring files to USC cloud storage
At USC, ITS has approved two cloud storage providers: Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive. You can use either one, but note that there is no benefit to uploading files to both. If you have a significant amount of data to transfer, we recommend automatic syncing; if you just have a few files/folders, we recommend manual uploading:
Automatically sync laptop folders with Google Drive

- Back up folders from the loaner to Google Drive using our guide:
Once you're sure that you've transferred all of your files from the loaner Windows laptop, you're all set and the loaner can now be returned to DTS.

Requesting a new device purchase
As our equipment loaner program is designed for emergency use limited to one semester in duration, we recommend that you look into computer purchasing options if you find yourself still in need of a computer after returning a loaner device.
