Overview
We’ve gathered the resources below to guide faculty through the steps for transferring files and returning IT equipment prior to retiring from the University and transitioning to emeritus status through the USC Emeriti Center.
This process can take some time, so we encourage you to review this guide well in advance of your last day. For assistance with file transfers and other technical troubleshooting, please contact the DTS Help Desk at ts@dornsife.usc.edu.
If you are retiring but won't hold emeritus status, you should refer to the IT checklist for retiring faculty instead.
Prior to becoming emeritus faculty
Before your last day, make sure to:
Transfer USC data you no longer need from your USC computer
Do not use Migration Assistant to transfer files between Macs: Migration Assistant will alter critical settings on Dornsife-managed Macs and will enroll personal Macs in USC IT systems. Instead, see Transferring your files to a new computer.
If you no longer need access to the data but your department or team does, you can transfer necessary files to them.
If you need continued access to the data to conduct University work, we recommend transferring files from your computer to your USC OneDrive account, which is approved by USC for the storage of sensitive data:
Migrate any Google data
Emeriti faculty do not have access to USC Google Apps (Gmail, Google Drive) and should use their USC Microsoft accounts instead for email and file storage:
Upon becoming emeritus faculty
When you transition from active faculty to emeritus status, your services transition out of USC Dornsife and into the Emeriti Center: this causes your Dornsife-specific accounts to automatically disable. Once you are emeritus faculty, you can request reactivation of your Dornsife-specific accounts.
Request reactivation of your Dornsife Account
If you need access to Dornsife technology resources such as Dornsife computers, printers, or folders on network drives, email DTS at ts@dornsife.usc.edu to request that your Dornsife Account be reactivated.
Request reactivation of your Dornsife-hosted website
If you previously had a Dornsife-hosted website and want to retain it as emeritus faculty, email dtsweb@dornsife.usc.edu to request that your website be reactivated.
Continue to receive USC technology support from the DTS Help Desk
If you need technical assistance with your USC computer or your Dornsife Account, continue to email the DTS Help Desk at ts@dornsife.usc.edu.
Continue to access the following USC online services (not managed by Dornsife)
- An "@usc.edu" email account, accessed through Outlook
- myUSC portal
- VPN access to USC resources
- USC Zoom account
- Your USC Zoom Phone number remains active: email ts@dornsife.usc.edu if you want to disconnect the number
- Microsoft Office 365, including OneDrive, and Microsoft Office applications
- Library services and e-resources
- TrojanLearn
- LinkedIn Learning
A note about returning USC-owned IT equipment
If you are using USC-owned IT equipment as an emeritus faculty member, but at some point decide to replace it, you will need to return the USC-owned equipment to DTS. Do not independently recycle or throw away any USC-owned IT equipment: USC will need to securely erase any assets containing USC data.
Examples of IT assets include:
- Computers, tablets, and phones
- External storage devices
- Monitors
- Printers
Devices will be erased upon return, so make sure that you transfer necessary files to your department or team before returning devices.
